The Vienna-based Sketchbook Quartet freely moves through genre stereotypes being progressive rock, chamber jazz or frequently-changing rhythms and unusual instruments. “ Wait, is this really jazz?!”, one might exclaim while listening to the tracks of SKETCHBOOK QUARTET. The music of this Viennese quartet has little to do with classical or traditional jazz music. The music and sound of Leonhard Skorupa, Daniel Moser, Andi Tausch and Hubert Bründlmayer is also quite unusual, idiosyncratic and atypical for this genre. The music is all about the mood and atmosphere, creating tension that is constantly
increased, until it finally reaches its climax with a big bang. Marked by an abundance of warmth and beauty, the music of the quartet hits a captivating tone of jazz that invites the listener to immerse into the music and drift through the sonic events. The quartet’s music falls into the haunting tone of jazz, inviting the listener to soak in the mood and ride the waves of sonic challenge. The quartet’s unusual and unexpected approach to playing – with intricate developments in the compositions combined with passion – creates an ultra-dynamic, fresh and groovy sound.
