This year’s edition of Bansko Jazz Festival offers an extraordinary musical journey, celebrating both the legacy and future of Bulgarian jazz. The concert unites generations of virtuosos, blending tradition with avant-garde expression in a program that promises to captivate both connoisseurs and new audiences alike.
The stage will welcome an exceptional ensemble: Vicky Almazidou (vocals) – a vocal phenomenon renowned for her emotional depth and technical brilliance, Arnau Garrofé (saxophone) – a master of lyrical phrasing and dynamic improvisation, Vasil Hadjigrudev (double bass) – one of Bulgaria’s most distinguished rhythm section innovators, Stoyan Yankoulov (drums) – a percussion legend with global acclaim.
A highlight of the evening will be the debut of pianist and composer Boris Petkov, whose original works defy categorization, merging jazz spontaneity with classical refinement and contemporary experimentation. His compositions reveal a rare duality – intellectually engaging yet profoundly soulful – showcasing a bold new voice in modern jazz.
The concert pays tribute to the immortal Milcho Leviev, Bulgaria’s jazz titan, through performances of his groundbreaking works. Vicky Almazidou will present a special segment dedicated to Leviev’s cinematic compositions, reimagining his film scores with fresh interpretative depth. This segment transcends mere performance, becoming a cultural dialogue between past and present.
More than a concert, this event is a living archive of Bulgarian jazz evolution – where heritage and innovation converge. Expect a night of virtuosic interplay, emotional intensity, and musical storytelling that lingers long after the final note.
