Jazz singer Miroslava Katsarova has earned a special place on the Bulgarian jazz scene owing to her rich and colorful voice, to her specific phrasing and to her vocal presentation full of nuances. Miroslava’s love and taste for jazz have developed in various aspects. She has been hosting two radio shows on Jazz FM – Singing’n’Swinging for vocal jazz and Desafinado for Latin jazz. In addition, for nine years, she has been an artistic director of the prestigious PLOVDIV JAZZ FEST. Through the years, she was supported by some of the finest Bulgarian jazz musicians such as Rumen Toskov, Hristo Yotsov, Dimitar Semov, Veselin Veselinov-Eco, Theodosii Spassov, Antoni Donchev. Lately, she has been productively collaborating with the pianist and composer Miroslav Turiyski.
Miroslava has released 4 albums so far (White on White 2001; Vuelvo Al Sur 2012; My CINEMA 2016; Violet Purple 2021). She sings not only in Bulgarian but also in four more foreign languages. Her concert programs tend to always be conceptual and the songs are carefully chosen: Singin’n’Swingin’ 2013 – dedicated to the Latin jazz and bossa nova; Blue Moon: Songs of Billie Holiday 2015 – for Lady Day’s 100th anniversary; April in Paris 2018 contains songs in French exclusively, especially arranged for jazz quartet and string quartet; Imagine – with the Opera Plovdiv symphony orchestra; The New Standards 2017, inspired by the contemporary art of singing; CINÉMA 2014 – mostly music from European movies.
In 2021, aiming to blend jazz and electronic sound, Miroslava Katsarova designed a new concert project entitled BLUETRONIC. The idea comes from Mladen Dimitrov aka DJ Mr. Moon with whom Miroslava has been collaborating for many years.
The title BLUETRONIC suggests that audiences can expect arrangements of certain Miroslava Katsarova’s songs revamped in electronic ambience. The selection involves tunes like “Ironically”, “Learning to Be with You”, “Miracles”, “The Road to the Endless Summer”, “Parfums” and “Summer Streets”. Besides, cover versions of Miroslava’s favorites are scheduled to be included in the setlist – for instance, Leonard Cohen’s Dance Me to the End of Love and Massive Attack’s Teardrop.
“ The idea behind BLUETRONIC is drawn from the blue notes that harmony requires, and, also, from my love for the melancholy vocal phrasing triggered by my intrinsic poignancy. But the songs and the arrangements are very bright and cheerful and were created during rehearsals. Mladen Dimitrov, has arranged atmospheric sounds that were generated electronically. They complement the hypnotic rhythms that he himself will play acoustically” says Miroslava Katsarova.
